MANILA, Philippines — The operations of Metro Manila’s busiest train
line were disrupted for an hour following a failed suicide attempt on
Thursday.
The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) said
28-year-old Rica Fernandez, a resident of Valenzuela City, jumped onto
the tracks of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Shaw Boulevard station just
as a southbound train was coming in to pick up passengers.
The incident happened at around 11:15 a.m.
Fernandez was rushed to the Polymedic General Hospital in Mandaluyong.
She survived being hit by the train, but her left leg, which was pinned
down, had to be amputated, the DOTC said.
As of 12:20 noon, operations were restored to normal, the DOTC said.
The MRT runs along Edsa, Metro Manila’s main thoroughfare, from North Avenue, Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay.
