Tropical Depression Maring continued to move east away from Batanes early Sunday, but the country can still expect rain due to the southwest monsoon, state weather forecasters said.

PAGASA said that as of 4 a.m., Maring was estimated at 470 km east of Itbayat in Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph, and moving east at 9 kph.

"The whole country will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rain showers and thunderstorms," it said in its 5 a.m. bulletin.

Also, it said moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail throughout the archipelago, and the coastal waters will be moderate to rough.

In Metro Manila, PAGASA said the rain over Metro Manila before dawn Sunday was due to a thunderstorm.

PAGASA said a thunderstorm also affected parts of Lanao del Sur, Cotabato, Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur before dawn Sunday.

Thunderstorms also brought moderate to heavy rain over Bataan, Zambales and Pampanga.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said the southwest monsoon may affect the seaboards of Northern Luzon and Central Luzon, the seaboard of Cavite, Mindoro Occidental and the western coast of Batangas.

"Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it said.
