TAIPEI: Taiwan singer Jay Chou revealed on Saturday that he intends to give NT$10.8 million (S$446,800) in financial aid to 300 needy students in Taiwan over the next five years, reported Taiwan media.

The Mandopop superstar, who has donated NT$9.72 million (S$402,100) since 2009 and had helped about 1,350 Taiwan children afford basic education, made the announcement at a media conference, during a special event which gave him a chance to meet some of the children he had helped so far.
Chou took the time to answer questions from the children at the event, and was very candid when asked about how he became a singer.
“When I started out, I didn’t really think about being a singer. I knew how to play the piano, so I hoped to be a pianist.
“Because I didn’t study at the time, I didn’t manage to get into university so I could only go on Jacky Wu’s show … and join a talent competition. That’s how I got into the business,” explained Chou.
The 35-year-old singer was very happy to meet with the children, but was a little perturbed when one of them addressed him as “Uncle Jay Chou”, and clarified that he should be called “Big Brother Jay Chou” instead.
